As many of you know, through my profession I meet and support a lot of people who struggle with stress and anxiety.
For most of my life, I have been fortunate enough not to experience these feelings to any significant degree. However, recently I have been under an enormous amount of stress and experienced anxiety unlike anything I have ever known. At one point, it became so overwhelming that I genuinely thought I was having a heart attack.
It has been a huge wake-up call.
Stress is often called the silent killer and I now understand why. It creeps up on you slowly until your mind and body simply cannot cope anymore.
One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that I cannot do everything for everyone. I need to protect my own health and wellbeing and that means learning a very important word...
NO.
In fact, there may even be a new course coming soon about exactly that!
When I return, "no" is going to become a word I use much more often. Not because I'm being difficult, rude or selfish but because my health matters.
And here's something I've realised:
"No" is a complete sentence.
You do not owe everyone an explanation.
You cannot pour from an empty cup.
Looking after yourself is not selfish; it's essential.
You only get one life and if people don't understand your boundaries, that's their issue to work through, not yours.
Today, I choose my health.
Today, I choose balance.
Today, I choose me.
